Why Choose a Career in HVAC? A great career for uncertain times! How would you like to get into a great career? What kind of career would it be? At Brownson Technical School, all we teach is Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration. Why? I think that it the greatest career there is! I have been working in this field all of my working life, and have never been unemployed for more than 1 week. Being an HVAC-Refrigeration Technician is like working in a “recession-proof” industry. I can’t predict the future, but I know the past. All of the recessions I have lived through show that HVAC-Refrigeration Technicians for the most part didn’t lose their jobs; in fact, usually the demand for repair went UP! Why? During tough times, people are more likely to repair equipment than to replace it. In fact, a lot of our students are former HVAC installers - being retrained to be technicians. Great Earning Potential HVAC-Refrigeration Technicians can earn great money. Click here to see what the wages are for graduates that work through the Local 250 union. As you look at this document, which is a public document, look at the third column over from the left, “total taxable”. The first year apprentice (Apprentice 1), will earn a minimum of $18.16 per hour, plus a lot of benefits which are to the right of “total taxable”. Journeymen earn a “total taxable” of at least $36.30 per hour. Again, this is the “minimum wage” an employer may pay a worker that is a member of the Local 250 union. Many employers will pay even more than this to find qualified technicians. I am proud of the fact that Brownson Technical School is a family owned business, which is rare in technical schools. What really makes me proud is when my graduates come back to visit, telling us how successful they now are and how great life is, now. For many, life wasn’t so great when they started school. Most were unemployed or had a job they hated. The reason they hated their job was either it paid very little for the work involved, or there was just something about that job that they just hated, it was a dead end job. Then, after a short few months, they had all these valuable skills. Life, for these graduates changed for the better. Not only did these people enjoy the paycheck, they usually really enjoy the work. This job involves working outside, and is a very much a “people job”. You work not only with co-workers, but also customers. Wait, you aren’t comfortable around customers? Don’t worry, customer service skills are part of the training. The best part is that you don’t work in an office or warehouse! Most HVAC-Refrigeration technicians spend most of their time working in the field taking care of homeowner’s HVAC equipment, business HVAC systems, and commercial refrigeration equipment located anywhere something has to be kept cold. This work is not boring! Customers are relying on you to tell them what is wrong and what must be done to fix their equipment. We tell our students to think of themselves as Doctors. Just like Doctors, HVAC-Refrigeration Technicians will use test equipment frequently as sophisticated as Doctors use to gain information about their patients. Not being challenged by work, and doing work that we can just “sleepwalk” through is what makes a job boring. HVAC-Refrigeration technicians are very likely to really enjoy their work. It is a challenging, rewarding, and honest way to help people be comfortable in their home, at their place of work, and also keep food from going bad. Very Important: HVAC-Refrigeration technicians help save energy and to protect the environment. Imagine helping preserve the environment and making great money. Now think about this, imagine working for a boss that is terrified you might quit. It is so hard to hire quality technicians, employers usually bend over backwards to keep great technicians. The Program – how to get the skills to get into this great careerMost really great technicians went to school to get their skills. Just as you would want your Doctor to have gone to school to learn how to properly work on you, customers want you to go to school to learn how to properly work on their delicate and expensive HVAC-Refrigeration equipment. Problem is, who has the time to spend years learning a new career? Good news! Brownson Technical Schools offer accelerated training, geared to get you into the career FAST. How do we do this? Time after time, virtually all evidence points to hands-on training as being the best, fastest way to learn most things. When you learned how to ride a bicycle, you probably didn’t go to classroom to learn it, you probably went out on the street and kept trying until you learned how to ride that bicycle. Brownson Technical School also believes that the best way to learn this technical field is to actually get your hands on the real equipment, then learn by doing. Yes, time will have to be spent in the classroom due to the highly technical nature of the work, but at Brownson Technical School, students spend as much time as possible in the hands-on part of the training. Want to know how to spot a school that does hands-on training? It looks like a working shop, it might not be as pretty and clean as some schools, but you can see the evidence of work being done. The opposite is true of schools that don’t do hands-on training, it is easy for them to be nice and clean, not much going on there. Another factor that has an effect on learning would be what kind of instructors teach at the school. Finding and keeping good instructors is difficult. Instructors must first, be well trained themselves, they must also know how to teach. This requires finding more than someone that knows the field, it means finding some that knows the field and can communicate it to others. Brownson Technical School has a commitment to hiring quality, qualified, committed instructors to make learning as easy and believe it or not, as much fun as possible.
